Marcy Playground has released a new album. This is their fourth studio album to date and first since 2004’s “Marcy Playground 3.” Oh yeah and yes these are the guys who wrote the song, “Sex and Candy.” You remember that song back when you were either in high or college, it was everywhere. It even sprung up in the new movie, “Zack and Miri Make A Porno.” It seems like such a lifetime ago when their first album, “Marcy Playground” came out. Singer/songwriter John Wozniak did have 2 more albums after their self-titled debut sold 1.7 million copies. He then decided to work on his production skills. He was the owner and operator of Mushroom recording studio which is become a famed studio in Vancouver from 1999 to 2006. Now let’s get to the music.

This album is very unique; right away anyone can tell who the band is just by the singer’s voice. Wozniak has really brought about so many different types of sounds into each track. The album has a very folk/indie sound to it. Wozniak lyrics are very intriguing as well somewhat comical in the way that he presents them. Each song seems to have a nice chorus to it that will have the listener tapping their feet while singing along. Marcy Playground has put together a very nice album that I don’t think many people would have expected from them.

The arrangement of each song is done so precisely and it seems as though the Playground are on their way back. This album might not catch the attention of the listener at first, but listening over and over again will have this album playing over and over again. Wozniak’s voice and guitars are very powerful and gets you ready for the next song. This album will really give you mind a nice trip and it really does seem like Marcy Playground are taking you on a journey.

If a different type of album is something that of interest then this album is definitely the one you should pick up and check out. Remember how much singing “Sex and Candy” made you feel great well this album might help you get back into that frame of mind.

7.5/10
